Developing improvisational skills through solo transcription and analysis. Transcriptions are used to develop the ears, to derive technical exercises, and for analysis to gain understanding of the theory and techniques used to construct phrases.

The following solo transcriptions are included as complete examples:

• John Scofield: Guitar solo on the chord changes to Evansville, from his album "Flat Out".
• Randy Brecker: Trumpet solo on the chord changes to I Can’t Get Started from the Hal Galper album "Speak With A Single Voice".
• Ron McClure: Acoustic bass solo on the chord changes to Broken Dreams, from his album "McJolt".
• Herbie Hancock: Electric piano solo on the chord changes to No Means Yes from his album "Sunlight".
